    Furniture Repair

We repair all types of furniture, from antiques, to vintage to modern. Any furniture from 150 years and up. This also applies to all the others below. We repair items that may have fallen apart, broke or chipped. We can even repair or replace pieces that are missing. Depending on the material we can make or replace the missing or broken parts. We also repair plastic furniture. Depending on damage and if all pieces are there. Tiny piece or anything 1/8th or smaller we can filled in. We also repair picture frames and wicker.

Re-gluing, repairing chairs, tables, drawers, etc.

We can re-glue or if necessary dowel, use a steel rod or replace broken parts and restore the item. Although this is a delicate task, we can't get what items needs repairing back to a 100%. That would be unrealistic, once broke, it's not longer 100% but we strive for 80 to 95% or as close as possible.

    Furniture Restoration

Restoration can be as simple as tightening a couple of loosened joints and removing years of grime embedded in the finish of any furniture piece, antique or family heirloom. Other times restoration will entail disassembling every component of a furniture piece, cleaning every surface where the assembly comes together, then re-gluing the joinery and fastening as needed and where appropriate.

Restoration can also involve faithful and accurate replacement of missing parts, repairing or laying up fine veneers and the repair or replacement of damaged/missing hardware, regardless of whether it is an antique, a family heirloom or just something you found at a rummage sale we take pride in our work and it shows in the finished product. Whatever your restoration needs are we will provide quality care and treat it as if it was our own.

We do not clean or restore any type of leather. We can however recommend someone who can.

    Furniture Repurposing

It doesn't matter if you have literally outgrown a furniture piece or you are at that point in your life where you are down-sizing; the urge to recapture the piece and reintegrate it back into your daily life never goes away. Maybe you found a unique furniture piece at a fine furniture store, antique dealer, rummage sale or by the roadside you want to repurpose. Perhaps you would like to convert a row of drawers into doors, or an old double dresser into a triple dresser or, you simply want to change a existing color to a new one. Maybe even distress it.

We at Renu can handle the job. Renu can even take an old dresser with wonderful character and convert into a stately bathroom vanity with a sink of your choice and plumbed to fit your existing pipes. All you need is a plumber to install the fittings. Renu will do the job so well no one would guess your fine furniture piece was altered to fit your idea of what it should be.

    Repair Veneer

Veneered furniture is not necessarily inferior. Veneer has been used for hundreds of years to showcase the grain of various woods--oak, walnut, mahogany, maple--all with distinctive grain patterns. If necessary we do duplicate or replace pulls, knobs, and handles. We also try to FIX the broken pieces to keep the item as original as possible. (also see furniture repair)

We DO NOT like to alter or change your precious antiques or heirlooms. By altering it are replacing it with a newer veneer ruins it's character and charm not including it's value and uniquity. The only time we will change or alter the item is if the customer wants the item distressed or repainted.

    Refinishing

We refinish by hand! This is important because dipping can dissolve glue joints and loosen veneer.

    An important note on Refinishing

Refinishing increases the value of almost all vintage and antique furniture. The exceptions are pieces dating back at least 150 years or with special finishes such as fumed oak which can be harmed by refinishing. We will tell you if your piece is one of these. We all want functional furniture that looks great, not too glossy and plastic.

In addition to the above, we "do not" strip the furniture, meaning sand down old stain and varnish, and redo it. We only refinish it or restore it- as it is. We do not alter the item. We want the antique to stay as original as possible.

    Trunk Restore or Repair

Over the years Renu owner, Valerie has seen so many trunks stripped down and repainted when it didn't need to be. She has seen one that was almost 90% original only to see it taken down, repainted, brass repainted and resold. This type of restoring is saddening. The rarity of finding such a treasure only to be destroyed and lose over 50% of it's value is not necessary.

As you may have read throughout this page we do not alter or change the item, we try to keep it as original as possible, however, when it comes to this section the owner has a choice on how they want to do their trunk. If the owner wants it altered or the brass painted we leave that up to them. If a customer comes in to our store to have his/her trunk restore back to it's original form we will honor that wish. If the customer has another idea they want to use it for, then we will fulfill their needs and do the trunk as they wish.

In the end, whatever the customer decides, Renu is up for the challenge, to transform their trunk to whatever they wish.

We restore/repair/repurpose doll trunks too. New, used and antiques.

Shipping & Handling your Delicate Piece

Wherever possible, please wrap each piece in white tissue paper. Do not use newspaper or colored paper as the print or dye may stain. Fragments may be gathered together in a cloth or soft paper and placed in a zip lock bag. Please place the piece in a trash bag. This protects the item from accidental staining or leakage from another package.

Be sure to include your name, address, email address and telephone number.

If return postage is required, we can ship it back but at the owners cost. You may make your own shipping arrangements through a courier if you so wish. Once the item has left the studio, no responsibility can be taken for breakages or loss so please ensure that the item(s) are adequately insured if you do your own arrangement. If we handle the shipping and packing of the item we will insure it to protect both owner and Renu.
